Symbolia Magazine

Client: Symbolia

In 2012, I cofounded Symbolia with Erin Polgreen. Symbolia was an interactive digital magazine that published long-form journalism told through comics. In just over two years we published hundreds of pages of comics journalism and worked with dozens of contributors from around the world. We were hailed as one of the top reasons to switch to digital comics by io9, and FastCo named Symbolia one of 2012's best digital comics.

In addition to publishing content on our own platform, we also collaborated with top tier media organizations to produce and promote amazing stories. Our partners included American Public Media's Public Insight Network,, Common Cause, Minnesota Public Radio, Tumblr, and Popular Science.

As Cofounder and Creative Director, I developed Symbolia's visual brand and designed the publication for digital production, as well as handling all the art direction, design, and visual communication for the company. I also worked with Erin to edit visual narratives and identified opportunities for interactive content both within Symbolia's stories and in our work with other media organizations.
